Do Comedogenic Ratings Really Matter?
Yes — but they’re only part of the picture.
Comedogenicity is considered in every Matilda Jane formula
Ratings are based on single ingredients, tested in isolation
They don’t account for formulation, percentage, or ingredient interaction
What actually matters most:
• The finished formula
• Total lipid load and structure
• Skin barrier health and individual tolerance
An ingredient’s rating alone doesn’t predict how a product will behave on real skin.
Formulation matters more than the number.
Evidence-led. Thoughtfully formulated.

What Comedogenic Ratings Measure
Comedogenic ratings use a 0–5 scale to estimate an ingredient's likelihood of clogging pores. These ratings originated from rabbit ear and patch tests on isolated ingredients, which often fail to reflect the performance of complete, real-world formulations.¹
